Rehard's Conoco Service at 3401 University is among three Iowa service stations that have agreed to refund gasoline revenue in excess of legal limits, according to officials of the regional office of Federal Energy Administration in Kansas City, Mo. The Iowa firms and the amounts they are to refund: Rehard's Conoco, Posey's Standard Service in Sioux City, and Yetter Oil Co.
in Burlington, $50,226 for gasoline and $37,403 for fuel oil. Federal officials said Rehard's already has lowered its prices and refunded the overcharges. A Rehard's Conoco Here Agrees to Pay Refunds Asks Polk Jail Visit Guidelines By Steven Walters Polk County District Court Judge Anthony Critelli Monday told the Des Moines Police Department to prepare guidelines governing the identification of local attorneys who visit the jail to consult with their clients. However, he refused to dismiss a charge of possession of amphetamines filed last Tuesday against a Memphis, woman, Laverne Jackson, whose case prompted Critelli's call for guidelines. The woman's attorney, Marlyn Jensen of Des Moines, had asked that the charge be dismissed because he was prevented from seeing his client by police last Wednesday.
In a hearing before Critelli Monday, Police Records Sgt. A. Douglas Davis testified that some identification as an attorney is necessary before persons are admitted to the visiting room where clients are interviewed. Davis testified that he personally knows most attorneys who appear at the City Jail but that he had never seen Jensen. Daivs refused to permit Jensen to interview his client after he said Jensen failed to produce any identification establishing that he was an attorney.
"No Conspiracy" Jensen could only produce: a driver's license and other a attempts at identification failed. Critelli refused to dismiss the charge against the Tennessee woman, ruling that there was no conspiracy or intent by policemen to deprive her of her right to see her attorney. However, Critelli said police need a standard policy or guideline on the subject and said he would personally contact Police Chief Wendell Nichols to ensure that action is tak- en. Sergeant Cleared Meanwhile, Asst. Police Chief Billie B.
Wallace said Monday he is "satisfied" after a departmental investigation that Sergeant Davis and a police matron, Florence Welshons, "acted properly" in refusing to allow Jensen a to see Ms. Jackson because a Wallace said the attorney could not identify himself as a lawyer. Wallace said "as far as I am concerned" the investigation clears the sergeant and the matron "absolutely" from any wrongdoing or "allegation of attempt to deny an attorney the right see his cleint." "Thousands of attorneys have gone back there to see clients and we know most of them, but someone we don't know we have to have some identification because we can't just have anybody running around back there," Wallace said. Pays $110 Fine After Incident At Tavern Here George A. Briley of 370 N.W. Fifty-second Ave. has paid a total of $110 in fines as a result of three charges by Polk County sheriff's officers in connection with a Friday incident at the and Lounge at Northwest Fiftieth Place and Second Avenue. Briley paid a $50 fine for aggravated intoxication, $35 for assault and battery and $25 for resisting arrest, after he pleaded guilty to the charges before District Associate Judge Norman Elliott.
According to sheriff's officers, Briley was in the tavern when he refused deputies' requests to leave the area. Outside the tavern, Briley allegedly struck Sheriff's Deputy Randy Cross and kicked Deputy Joseph Kerfoot. The incident occurred shortly after 10 p.m. Friday, sheriff's deputies said. (AP) Nineteen persons were arrested and another 100 given summonses in a weekend raid on an illegal dog fight, police said. A dozen dogs, some bloodied by fights, were taken into custody by the humane society, said State after Attorney Robert Egan the Saturday night raid in a wooded area of Orange County. An undetermined number of dogs was released into surrounding fields by their owners when the raid began, he said.
Officers found two dogs still locked in combat and had to pry the animals apart with a stick, Egan said. Arrests were made on charges which included gambling, cruelty to animals and liquor sales violations. About 100 spectators were given summonses at the scene, and Egan said some may be called upon to testify at trials resulting from the raid. The raid interrupted a schedule of nine fights in an arena covered with a plastic tarpaulin and lit by bare bulbs powered by a portable electric generator, Egan said. Police said most of the dogs involved were pit terriers, similar to a Staffordshire terrier.
